What a week! On Monday, I flew out to Washington, D.C., to submit our applications for our visas, with a view to getting them this afternoon and returning to Eau Claire tomorrow. I got back to EC last night, and I need to return Tuesday evening to pick up the passports and visas on Wednesday. This has been a three-ring circus, indeed, and, to be honest, I don't know what I would have done without the folks at INVISA to help me through everything, but I am sure that I wouldn't be going to Russia, and neither would the students.
I should have known that there would be problems when I got lost on the 2-block walk from the Metro station to my hotel. I decided to use the GPS feature of my new iPhone (yes, the flip phone has been officially retired), and stepped wrongly on an uneven spot in the pavement, and ended up with a high ankle sprain. I visited the ER ay 3:30 am local time and got x-rays and wrapping, as well as some pain pills. Fortunately, I have only needed one pill, and today I was able to wear my old boot.
When I got to INVISA on Tuesday, I found that we had made a number of mistakes in the paperwork, and it took two days to get it fixed right. That means that I now pick things up on Wednesday—17 hours before boarding the plane in Minneapolis.
