Officially embarrassed

So...today, June 13, began with me sleeping through my alarm on the phone, only to be woken after 10:30 by a phone call from Valery Shtyrlin (the lead translator on my book with the Russian translations of my papers on the History of Chemistry) saying that he was in the lobby. Tonight I get a wake-up call. No more relying on my phone. I guess that jet lag just doesn't want to let me go! Even now, at just 5:12 in the afternoon, I am getting very, very sleepy.

Anyway, I rushed down, to find out that I had a typo in my e-mail to Vladimir Galkin, so Valery had come on over from the Institute to check on me because nobody could reach me by telephone. Duh...
As always seems to happen here, I have done an incredible amount of walking, much of it up and down hills, so it is nice to get the boot off for a while. Nevertheless, it is clear to me that there is still a significant amount of time in the b oot that will be required before I can get rid of it. I now am pretty certain that this will require all our time in Russia. Oh well...we make do.

Tonight I still have to go to the grocery store for Sprite and water (and the most delicious little chocolate-covered marshmallow-creme cookies). I am now almost out of the cash that I came with, so I will have to get some cash from the ATM at the hotel.

Today, since our first appointments are not until tomorrow, we went to the Peter-Paul Cathedral. This is the one Russian Orthodox Church where you can take photographs inside, and it is, in my opinion, prettier and less ostentatious than the Cathedral of the Assumption in the Kremlin. On the outside, on the other hand, it is far more ornate than any other cathedral that I have seen. The photographs below do not really do it justice, but you can get an idea of the beautifully ornate interior. By the way, if it looks gold, the odds are good that it is gold!

This one is just to the right of the previous one

The exterior of the cathedral. This is much more ornate than other churches.

I will load more photos later tonight or tomorrow, along with a more complete narrative.
